LOS ANGELES, CA – On Saturday, February 7th, the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC), InsideOUT Writers, the Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition, the L.A. Opportunity Youth Collaborative and Manifest Works hosted Representative John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) for a dialogue around youth advocacy and empowerment. Rooted in each organization’s commitment to investing in system-affected youth, this event centered on providing young people with the tools needed to share their stories and advocate for policies that improve youth outcomes, both in their communities and across the U.S.

One of our nation’s leading civil rights icons, Congressman Conyers has served the people of Southeast Michigan since 1965. Currently the Dean of the Congress and Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, Rep. Conyers is a founding Member of the Congressional Black Caucus, and the most Senior Member of the House of Representatives. Throughout his career, he has focused his efforts on promoting economic development and social justice in Michigan, and fighting for equality and the protection of civil rights for all Americans. One of Rep. Conyers’ most notable pieces of legislation is the Martin Luther King Holiday Act of 1983, which he introduced four days after the assassination of Dr. King on April 8, 1968.

“ARC and our partners feel strongly that the perspectives of young people who have experienced the juvenile justice and foster care systems need to be included in conversations around reforming these systems,” said Scott Budnick, Founder and President of ARC. “Through this event, we shared Rep. Conyers’ leadership and experience with the young people we serve, to empower them and spark a conversation around change,” Budnick added.

This event took place on Saturday, February 7th at 4pm PT at the offices of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, located in Downtown Los Angeles. Artist, author and activist Ise Lyfe moderated the dialogue and audience Q&A.
